Considered one of the key achievements of China's ancient civilization for its wealth of information on medicine, mineralogy, botany, zoology, and natural science, Compendium of Materia Medica covers the long period between remote antiquity and the Ming Dynasty when the book was first published in 1593.
As early as the 17th century, it is introduced through translations to some other countries in Asia, Europe and America as an essential work for the study of Chinese medical science and technology and ancient Chinese culture and history. However, with the exception of a complete Japanese translation published in Japan in the 1970s, only parts of Compendium of Materia Medica-mostly having to do with pharmacological therapeutics-have been translated. More difficult sections of the book involving history, culture and science have never been translated, with only abridged versions of the book available in the West.
To fill the void and make accessible to Western readers the full knowledge contained in this great scientific encyclopedia of China, the Foreign Languages Press is now pleased to present the first full English translation of the entire Compendium of Materia Medica. The translator and other experts have given many years of dedicated work to this project, trying to be true to the original text while providing notes to explain some of the contents in light of modern scientific research.

Details are provided on over 26,000 chemical and related products,(this includes an additional 3,000 products not listed in previous editions) included are the chemical name, its code and the codes of the producers for these products.

PART II : CHEMICAL PRODUCERS

Approximately 16,000 chemical and associated producers are covered in this Directory. Included are the producers code, name, address, post code, telephone number, fax number, email, URL and a contact name or director. Listed for each  producer are the main products they produce, and their capacity for production. This value is a valuable guide to  the export ability of producers. The number of employees and the annual output value may also be given.

PART III : CHEMICAL NAME INDEXES

The index lists all chemical products listed in the Directory, in alphabetical order, this allows quick reference to products of interest. Also shown are the individually assigned codes for each product.

PART IV : APPENDIXES (Import / export companies)

The appendixes contain a listing of the main companies and enterprises in China, engaged, and approved to carry out the import and export of chemicals. There are over 500 companies listed in this section divided into the major provinces within China. These companies represent groups of manufacturers in an area, they are often the approved   export source for many manufacturers. They also have the advantage of being able to source almost any product, through a network of local contacts within their area. These import /export companies are an excellent contact when  looking to source products from China. The Company names, address, telephone and fax are given.

The Chemical Products in Part I are arranged based on 19 categories in accordance with regulations  set by the Ministry of Chemical Industry of China, categories include; Inorganic & Organic Chemicals , Fertilisers, Polymers, Dyestuffs, Organic pigments, Catalysts, and Food additives. The Producers in  Part II are arranged by the order of provinces. Chemical producers within a province are listed according  to the order of their codes.
